🔹Eric Sickler enrolled at @centralcollege in 1980 and 40+ years later he still calls Pella home. Recently retired from a high-travel career in higher education marketing, this former college and agency vice president happily swapped his national client roster to volunteer with Spirit of Pella Steering Committee planning and marketing. Like so many local residents who moved here for college or work, Eric’s history, appreciation and respect for Pella runs deep.

That’s a wrap! The weather has been absolutely perfect and all the preparation paid off. What a beautiful addition to Downtown Pella🧡 Thank you everyone for your smiles, encouragement and excitement for our first mural. Meet the lady whose work inspired our very first m

Meet the lady whose work inspired our very first mural - resident Dutch expert and local artist, Milly Vande Kieft.

An educator by profession, Milly continues to share her love of Staphorst nail-head painting by teaching classes to groups of all ages at the Kerstmarkt (Dutch Christmas Market) and painting Staphorst items for the Pella Historical gift shop.

Members of the @spiritofpella Arts & Mural Committee sat down with Milly to learn more about this unique style of painting and see pictures from her trip to the small farming village of Staphorst, in the province of Overijssel, The Netherlands.

Staphorst women and girls use this nail-head painting technique called #stipwerk on the bodice (kraplap) and caps (muts) of their traditional dress which is still worn today!

This colorful folk art is done with the heads of different sizes of nails dipped in paint and pressed into floral and geometric patterns on black fabric. You'll see this style of painting on many costumes and wooden shoes at Tulip Time.

Thank you Milly for your devotion to Pella, your labor of love, and all your work to preserve our Dutch heritage.
